Director Statement:
The film begins with musical references to the Thuringian children’s song „Backe, backe, Kuchen“ (Bake, bake, cake).
This simple song is fundamentally enumerative in content, essentially a pure baking recipe. Its simplicity and clarity
radiate a „healthy“ approach to food. In other words: baking – simple – analog! In the short film, this cake is created
at the request of a young activist, even though the accompanying elements may remind one somewhat of the US short
film series „The Little Rascals.“ The intended feel-good atmosphere serves primarily the purpose of creating the
greatest possible anticipation for the punchline in the finale, which puts the issue of food waste at the center of the film.
Food Waste
Food waste is not only ethically questionable but also a waste of fundamental resources such as arable land, water,
and energy. Moreover, discarding food represents a financial inefficiency: on average, every Swiss household disposes
of food worth over 600 Swiss Francs annually, just like that. In Germany, the estimated amount of wasted food per person
is about 75 kg per year, which roughly equates to costs of around 235 euros per person per year.
However, this issue is not limited to Europe alone. In every corner of our globe, the careless handling of food can
be observed. From lush fields to bustling markets, from crowded supermarkets to home kitchens, food waste leaves
its bitter mark everywhere. Whether it’s on the endless fields of large-scale farms or in the narrow alleys of street
vendors, food meant for consumption often meets a sad end in the trash.
Humanity has reached a point where the consequences of its waste can no longer be ignored. A careless attitude
toward food not only risks squandering precious resources but also contributes to global ecological inequality.
While some revel in abundance, others struggle to obtain the most basic sustenance.
It is up to all of us to put a stop to this concerning trend. A more mindful approach to food, from production to
consumption, is necessary to preserve this precious resource and, at the same time, restore ecological balance.
Looking beyond our national borders should make us aware that addressing the challenge of food waste is a global
task that demands collective efforts. Only by addressing this issue on an international level and collaboratively
finding sustainable solutions can we improve the situation.

Der Film beginnt mit musikalischen Anspielungen auf das thüringische Kinderlied „Backe, backe, Kuchen“. Dieses
schlichte Lied ist von der Grundidee her aufzählend und stellt eine Backanleitung in Reinform dar. Die Einfachheit
und Klarheit strahlen den „gesunden“ Umgang mit Lebensmitteln aus. Anders gesagt: Backen – einfach – analog!
In dem Kurzfilm entsteht dieser Kuchen auf Anfrage einer jungen Aktivistin, obwohl das Nebensächliche ein wenig
an die US-amerikanische Kurzfilmserie „Die kleinen Strolche“ erinnern mag. Das beabsichtigte Gute-Laune-Gefühl
dient vor allem dazu, für das Finale die größtmögliche Fallhöhe für die Pointe zu schaffen, die das Thema
Lebensmittelverschwendung in den Mittelpunkt des Films rückt.
Food Waste
Die Lebensmittelverschwendung ist nicht bloß ethisch fragwürdig, sondern gleichermaßen eine Verschwendung von
grundlegenden Ressourcen wie Ackerland, Wasser und Energie. Zudem stellt das Wegwerfen von Lebensmitteln eine
finanzielle Ineffizienz dar: Im Durchschnitt entsorgt jeder Schweizer Haushalt pro Jahr Nahrungsmittel im Wert von
über 600 Franken einfach so. In Deutschland betrug die geschätzte Menge an verschwendeten Lebensmitteln pro Person
etwa 75 kg pro Jahr, was ungefähr Kosten von rund 235 Euro pro Person und Jahr entspricht.
Diese Problematik ist jedoch nicht auf Europa allein begrenzt. In sämtlichen Winkeln unseres Globus ist der
verantwortungslose Umgang mit Lebensmitteln zu beobachten. Von den saftigen Äckern bis zu den belebten Märkten,
von den belebten Supermärkten bis hin zu den heimischen Küchen, überall hinterlässt die Verschwendung ihre bittere Spur.
Ganz gleich, ob auf den endlosen Feldern der Großbetriebe oder in den schmalen Gassen der Straßenhändler – Lebensmittel,
die zum Verzehr bestimmt sind, finden oft ein trauriges Ende in der Mülltonne.
Die Menschheit ist an einem Punkt angelangt, an dem die Konsequenzen ihrer Verschwendung nicht länger ignoriert
werden können. Eine sorglose Haltung gegenüber Nahrungsmitteln birgt nicht nur die Gefahr der Vergeudung von kostbaren
Ressourcen, sondern trägt ebenso zur globalen ökologischen Ungleichheit bei. Während manche Menschen im Überfluss
schwelgen, kämpfen andere um die notwendigsten Grundnahrungsmittel.
Es liegt an uns allen, dieser bedenklichen Entwicklung Einhalt zu gebieten. Ein achtsamerer Umgang mit Lebensmitteln,
von der Produktion bis zum Verzehr, ist vonnöten, um diese kostbare Ressource zu bewahren und gleichzeitig die
ökologische Balance wiederherzustellen. Der Blick über die eigenen Landesgrenzen hinaus sollte uns bewusst machen,
dass die Herausforderung der Nahrungsmittelverschwendung eine globale Aufgabe ist, die nach gemeinsamen Anstrengungen
verlangt. Nur wenn wir uns dieser Problematik auf internationaler Ebene stellen und gemeinsam nachhaltige Lösungen finden,
können wir eine bessere und gerechtere Zukunft für uns alle gestalten.
